Ernest Barbella Synergy
Ernest Barbella earned his undergraduate degree from Baruch College of The City University of New York. Graduating in 1962, he then continued his post-graduate studies at Cornell University with a full scholarship from the Gerber Products Company. At Cornell, Ernest Barbella studied agricultural economics and food marketing under the tutelage of Professor Wendell Earl. After receiving his M.S., Ernest Barbella accepted a job as an Assistant Store Manager with Daitch Shopwell Supermarkets (now the Food Emporium) in 1964. Ernest Barbella was quickly appointed a District Manager for Daitch, supervising a group of seven stores in the Bronx.
After leaving Daitch, Ernest Barbella joined the Wakefern Food Corporation, a retail food cooperative with supermarkets across the Northeastern states. In his 10 years at Wakefern Food Corporation, Ernest Barbella rose from the position of Meat Buyer to become the Vice President of the Meat Division with its estimated 300 million dollars in annual sales. His responsibilities included management of the warehousing, purchasing, merchandising, and distribution of meat products. Ernest Barbella received several promotions while working for Wakefern Food, serving as Administrative Director of the Frozen Food Division and Vice President of Retail Store Operations.
Ernest Barbella has also held executive roles at Hills Supermarkets and the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc., both New York-based grocery chains. In his position as Executive Vice President of Hills Supermarkets, Ernest Barbella supervised all aspects of store operations. Ernest Barbella became the youngest Vice President at the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company and oversaw a $2 billion operation with 10,000 employees.
Ernest Barbella has also owned and operated a chain of five grocery stores. His latest entrepreneurial venture is a spice company based in Qingdao, China, which sells spices worldwide.
